SEC Chairman: We Want America to Lead the World in 5G

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai recently talked about the upcoming White House meeting which Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint are all expected to attend. The FCC Chairman says that it’s vital that we eliminate the local regulatory hurdles that are currently preventing 5G from being implemented in the US.

We Want America to Lead the World in 5G

We want America to lead the world in 5G just as we led the world in 4G. That, of course, takes private sector initiative but also requires government to set the stage in terms of getting the tools for the industry to use out there into the marketplace.

First, we want to outline a cross-government strategy, not just the FCC, but the entire Trump Administration is going to be on the same page in terms of asserting US leadership in 5g. We hope to learn from the industry is what are some of the necessary building blocks for 5g? We want America to be the home for innovation and investment for the next generation of wireless connectivity. We need to know what policies are needed in order to promote US leadership and I’m hoping it’ll be a very productive exchange.

I think there’s a strong case for optimism about it being sooner. We already see some of the nation’s biggest companies doing 5G trials and cities like Indianapolis. We see a lot of investment and innovation in some of the tech sectors but there’s also a reason to be concerned because we see a lot of the regulatory barriers to 5G deployment in terms of the infrastructure that is needed to get out there into the marketplace.

Local Government Regulations and Fees Holding Back 5G

These regulations are holding back the case for a 5G deployment. That’s part of the reason why the FCC has been focused on what I call our 5G Fast Plan – Facilitating America’s Superiority in 5G Technology. If we get the spectrum out there, incentivize infrastructure deployment, and modernize our regulations, I’m confident that we can hasten the day when Americans can turn to 5G just as they’ve come to rely on 4G.

We want to set the table so that every company, big and small, and regardless of where they happen to be trying to put deploy these 5G services, will be able to do so at scale in order to serve American consumers.

By far the biggest barrier is the domestic regulatory barriers that we face. For example, it takes one to two hours to install a small cell on a utility pole that’s necessary for 5G. In some cases, it can take a year or two years to get the regulatory approval for deploying that small cell. That by far is one of the greatest barriers to getting the wide-scale deployment of 5G technologies in the future.

Additionally, the spectrum that is necessary to get out into the marketplace has been a barrier. We’ve been working aggressively to fix that and we’ve already teed-up over the next year or so more spectrum for the commercial sector use then all of the mobile broadband providers today hold combined. I think those building blocks domestically are much more important for 5G in order to be deployed at scale.

We Don’t Want to Cede the Mantel of Wireless Leadership to China

China saw the success that the United States had in 4G and they want to claim that success for themselves. When it comes to 5G we want the United States to be the haven for innovation and investment not just out of some parochial concern but because we truly believe in a free and open Internet and the power of innovation and in the importance of the private sector leading this revolution. We think that this market-based approach is a superior one.

We, of course, don’t want to cede the mantle of wireless leadership to any other country and our concern is that if China is the first mover in 5G that they will be able to draw some of that capital, some of that talent, and ultimately some of that innovation to their shores.

I think about some of the applications here in terms of precision agriculture and telemedicine and the Internet of Things and all kinds of other applications we can’t even conceive today. All that could be on tap if we make the right decisions here in the United States and I think that’s going to be a boon for American consumers and for our Internet economy.

Want Your Brand to Look More Sophisticated? Think Black!

Most people never think twice about the colors that their favorite brands use. However, businesses spend a lot of time and money deciding on which hue is best for their products. This is because colors affect people’s feelings on a subconscious level. They are also associated with certain cultural or social messages.

Colors come with so many meanings. Blue has a calming influence on people. It also gives off the impression of trustworthiness and dependability. In contrast, red is associated with passion and danger. It can also give off a refined and powerful vibe, which is why red wines are considered richer than whites.

As a small business owner, never underestimate the impact color has on your brand. Corporations with large marketing departments, understand this all too well. For instance, most skin care companies use white in their product packaging as it symbolizes purity and cleanliness. Banks tend to use the color blue to give off an image of dependability. But what if you want to give your product a luxurious feel and classy image?

Why Black is Considered Luxurious

No other color has such a polarizing effect as black. Some western countries associate it with death and mourning. The media has also used it to portray villainy and evilness. However, the past few decades have seen the color become the epitome of luxury and class.

Despite the negative connotations, black is also associated with power, authority, class, and sophistication. Consider how high-end events are often black tie affairs, with women wearing the requisite little black dress. The color is very formal and serious and can evoke feelings of strength and intelligence.

Interestingly, black also has a slimming effect, which is why the color is used to make a product (or a person) smaller than it really is.

Look Who’s Using Black

Numerous companies have taken advantage of the way black evokes power and sophistication. For instance, makeup brands have used the color to provide their products with a sleek and classy look. Notice how even simple makeup brushes look more expensive with the color.

Ralph Lauren has even named one of their men’s scents after the color and used it as the background of their ads. Their predominantly dark ads for Polo Black target men who consider themselves to be strong and mysterious but with a depth of personality.

Brands that cater to men and luxury items have found great success in using this particular color. Rolls Royce cars are typically black, with a sleek and shiny outline. The same goes for Don Q. The rum brand uses black with splashes of gold.

There’s no denying that black is a powerful color. However, it can also be overwhelming. Use black in your packaging, your ads, and website to give off the image of luxury. But try to pair it with colors like red or gold for a striking contrast. You’ll find that your customers will be more than willing to pay extra for something that looks expensive and luxurious even if the quality is average.

MozCon 2018 is nearing and it’s almost time to brush off that microphone. If speaking at MozCon is your dream, then we have the opportunity of a lifetime for you! Pitch us your topic and you may be selected to join us as one of our six community speakers.

What is a community speaker, you ask? MozCon sessions are by invite only, meaning we reach out to select speakers for the majority of our talks. But every year we reserve six 15-minute community speaking slots, where we invite anyone in the SEO community to pitch to present at MozCon. These sessions are both an attendee favorite and a fabulous opportunity to break into the speaking circuit.

Interested in pitching your own idea? Read on for everything you need to know:

The details

  • Fill out the community speaker submission form
  • Only one submission per person — make sure to choose the one you’re most passionate about!
  • Pitches must be related to online marketing and for a topic that can be covered in 15 minutes
  • Submissions close on Sunday, April 22nd at 5pm PDT
  • All decisions are final
  • All speakers must adhere to the MozCon Code of Conduct
  • You’ll be required to present in Seattle at MozCon

If you submit a pitch, you’ll hear back from us regardless of your acceptance status.

What you’ll get as a community speaker:

  • 15 minutes on the MozCon stage for a keynote-style presentation, followed by 5 minutes of Q&A

  • Four nights of lodging covered by Moz at our partner hotel

The selection process:

We have an internal committee of Mozzers that review every pitch. In the first phase we review only the topics to ensure that they’re a good fit for our audience. After this first phase, we look at the entirety of the pitch to help us get a comprehensive idea of what to expect from your talk on the MozCon stage.

Want some advice for perfecting your pitch?

  • Keep your pitch focused to online marketing. The more actionable the pitch, the better.
  • Be detailed! We want to know the actual tactics our audience will be learning about. Remember, we receive a ton of pitches, so the more you can explain, the better!
  • Review the topics already being presented — we’re looking for something new to add to the stage.
  • Keep the pitch to under 1200 characters. We’re strict with the word limits — even the best pitches will be disqualified if they don’t abide by the rules.
  • No pitches will be evaluated in advance, so please don’t ask :)
  • Using social media to lobby your pitch won’t help. Instead, put your time and energy into the actual pitch itself!
  • Linking to a previous example of a slide deck or presentation isn’t required, but it does help the committee a ton.
