Google Unveils Stadia Game Streaming Platform and is Dead Serious About Eliminating Barriers and Making High-End Gaming Accessible for Everyone

Google CEO Sundar Pichai unveiled their Stadia game streaming platform at the 2019 Game Developers Conference in San Fransisco today. Stadia is designed to bring high-end gaming to Chrome and other devices and aims to eliminate the many barriers to gaming. It will likely be a subscription service similar to Netflix but focused on games that can be played without a console right in Chrome or other devices.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, introduces Stadia, Google’s new streaming gaming platform at the 2019 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco:

Biggest Impact of Gaming is How it Pushes Technology Forward

Perhaps the biggest impact of gaming is how it pushes us to make big leaps in computing and networking power, high fidelity graphics, and the infrastructure that supports it all. All of it is pushing computing and technology forward and I find it really exciting. At Google, we have always believed that technology should adapt to people. Not the other way around. We’ve been building towards this vision for some time. For example, when we launched Chrome a decade ago we envisioned that it could be a modern platform for web applications. We wanted to bring the power of the web to everyone including use cases that seemed impossible at that time like high-quality games.

Finally, we are making progress towards that goal. In fact, over the last two years, we’ve been hard at work on game streaming technology. Last Fall, we launched our first public test with Project Stream. But a technical test wasn’t the whole view of our ambition. It was probably the worst kept secret in the industry. Internally, we were actually testing our ability to stream high fidelity graphics over a low agency network. We learned that we could bring a triple-A game to any device with a Chrome browser and an internet connection, using the best of Google to create a powerful game platform.

Google Committed to Paying Billions to Game Developers

When we say best of Google, it always starts with our cloud and networking infrastructure. Our custom server hardware and data centers can bring more computing power to more people on planet Earth than anyone else. Today, we are in 19 regions, and in over 200 countries and territories connected by hundreds of thousands of miles of fiber optic cables. The best of Google also includes our open platforms that allow us to reach billions of people. With Google, your games will be immediately discoverable by over two billion people on a Chrome browser, Chrome Books, Chrome Cast, Pixel Devices, and we have plans to support more browsers and devices over time. That’s in addition to all of the people playing and watching games across YouTube and Google Play.

When we build these ecosystems, we always take the approach that we only succeed when our partners do. Collectively, our partners across web, Google Play, and YouTube have earned more than $ 110 billion over the last four years alone. We are committed to this approach here as well. So now, we have focused on our next big effort, which is to build a game platform for everyone. And, when we say for everyone, we really mean it. It is one of our most cherished values as a company. Be it Android or Chrome or AI, we are dead serious about making technology accessible for everyone.

Google is Dead Serious About Eliminating Barriers

But, if you think about games, there are a lot of barriers for users to play high-end games. Beautiful graphics really need high-end consoles or PCs. And games don’t have instant access. Think about the way the web works. You can easily share a link and it works seamlessly. We want games to feel that way too. Instantly enjoyable with access for everyone.

I think we can change the game by bringing together the power and creativity of the entire community, people who love to play games, people who love to watch games, and people who love to build games. That means all of you. We are really excited to work with you. We want to build a platform and we want you to show us what’s possible. And together, I think we can create a new games experience powered by best of Google and built for everyone.

Apple Unveils iPhone X, Here’s What it Can Do

On Tuesday, Apple hosted its first-ever event at the new Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California. The company unveiled several new products at the event which included 4K Apple TV and the Apple Watch Series 3 which comes with a cellular connection. Of course, the highlight of the evening was the announcement of Apple’s new line of smartphones—the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and the tenth-anniversary phone aptly named the iPhone X (pronounced iPhone Ten).

The first iPhone launched on June 9th, 2007, with spectacular success. Ten years later, Apple is set to make waves yet again with the iPhone X.  Packed with innovative new features, the flagship model phone will be a must-have for Apple enthusiasts and a new cash cow for the company.

Face ID

Previous speculations were indeed correct. With iPhone X, Apple decided to ditch Touch ID as the phone primary security feature. Instead, the new phone now sports an all-new Face ID system touted to be even more secure than the Touch ID it replaces.

So just how secure is iPhone X’s Face ID? The Touch ID fingerprint sensor comes with a one in 50,000 chance of a person other than you being able to unlock the device. With the new Face ID, however, the odds are now one in a million.

In fact, Apple is convinced that the new Face ID is so secure that it can be used to authorize purchases on Apple Pay. Since it uses a 3D sensing technology, the system cannot be fooled by a mere 2D photo of your face. In addition, the technology is advanced enough to recognize your unique facial features even if you’re wearing eyeglasses and a hat.

Ultra Sharp Edge To Edge Screen

The new iPhone X also comes with a vastly improved display resolution. It has a high resolution, 2436×1125 5.8 inch OLED display dubbed by Apple as a super retina display. To boot, the screen has over two million pixels, offering the sharpest display ever on an iPhone model.

What is even more exciting is the bezel-less display, allowing for a wider screen without any added bulkiness to the device. However, this also means that there is no longer a home button. To wake the phone, you’ll simply need to tap the screen.

New Cameras

The new iPhone X is also equipped with new cameras. The front camera is a 7 MP TrueDepth camera that Apple specifically developed not only for taking great selfies but also for use as the sensor of the new Face ID technology, Macworld reported.

At the back of the phone is a dual-lens 12MP camera complete with a wide angle lens to capture scenery and a telephoto lens if you need to zoom in on your subject. The new phone is said to be capable of producing the highest quality video on any available smartphone with improvements to its stabilization technology (new gyroscopes and accelerometers) resulting in less shaky outputs. You can now capture 4K videos at 60 fps or opt for a slo-mo 240 fps at 1080p.

Animoji Feature

If you’re the type of person who loves emojis, then it’s hard to ignore iPhone X’s  cool new “Animoji” feature. The phone allows you to make brief clips of your face and turn them into instant emojis. With the Facial recognition capability of the phone, it can help make an emoji that best represents the facial expression you are making at the moment.

Wireless Charging

Apple has finally embraced wireless charging technology for its latest products. The iPhone X, along with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, will be charged wirelessly using the Qi standard. Apple is tweaking the technology a bit and plans to later launch AirPower, an accessory that allows you to simultaneously charge three devices.

Retail Price

There are two variants to the iPhone X. The 64GB phone is priced at $ 999 while the 256GB variant sells for $ 1,149. A11 Bionic chip powers the iPhone X with its 6-core CPU design said to be the most powerful for a smartphone. Coupled with the three-core GPU designed by Apple, the phone is powerful enough for machine learning and 3D games.

Unfortunately, fans will have to wait a bit before they could get their hands on Apples tenth anniversary phone. The iPhone X released date is slated for November 3, 2017. However, Apple is accepting pre-orders starting October 27.

In the meantime, you might want to check out on the two other new phones unveiled by Apple. iPhone 8 has a 4.7-inch Retina display while the bigger iPhone 8 Plus has a 5.5-inch display. Both devices are available on September 22 but you can preorder as early as September 15.

Google Unveils PAIR Initiative to Improve Relationship Between Humans and AI

Google announced Monday a new initiative geared towards improving the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence (AI).

The project, called People + AI Research (PAIR), will see Google researchers analyze the way humans interact with AI and the pieces of software it powers. The team, to be led by Google Brain researchers and data visualization experts Fernanda Viégas and Martin Wattenberg, will work to determine how best to utilize AI from the perspective of humans.

“PAIR is devoted to advancing the research and design of people-centric AI systems. We’re interested in the full spectrum of human interaction with machine intelligence, from supporting engineers to understanding everyday experiences with AI,” the website for the initiative says.

The thrust of PAIR is to have AI in a form that is more practicable to humans, or to make it “less disappointing or surprising,” as described by Wired.

An application of this idea would be the use of AI as an aid for professionals like musicians, farmers, doctors and engineers in their vocations. Google, however, did not go into detail on how it will go about putting this idea into practice.

The researchers also hope to help form impressions of artificial intelligence that will enable people to have realistic expectations of it.

“One of the research questions is how do you reset a user’s expectations on the fly when they’re interacting with a virtual assistant,”  Viégas said.

Viégas and Wattenberg, along with the 12 full-time members of the PAIR team at Google, will also be working with experts from Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

PAIR, according to Google, will “ensure machine learning is inclusive, so everyone can benefit from breakthroughs in AI.” Nevertheless, as Fortune points out, there have been questions of whether tech giants like Google and Facebook are keeping AI knowledge to themselves after hiring many highly regarded researchers in different areas of AI such as deep learning.

Foursquare Unveils New Voting App for Election Day

Today, Foursquare unveiled the new “I Voted” app. Powered by the Google Civic Information API, the app will give you everything you need to know to make you a good citizen and informed voter.

Well, maybe not a truly informed voter – Foursquare isn’t run by magicians. But it will give you some basic info on where to be, what you’ll need, and what your choices are on November 6th.

“Connect the ‘I Voted’ app to your Foursquare account today. You’ll be able to find your polling station and learn about the candidates and propositions that will be on your ballot ahead of time,” says Foursquare. It will also provide you with voter ID requirements in whatever state you’re voting in.

Foursquare says that the voting initiative is a combined effort with Engage, the Voting Information Project, Pew, and the New Organizing Institute.

If information wasn’t enough of an incentive to connect the “I Voted” app, they’re also offering a special election day badge for anyone who includes the #ivoted hashtag inside their check-in and the polling location.

One of the more interesting parts about the announcement is the unveiling of election.foursquare.com. As of now, it’s just a gateway to the “I Voted” app. But the company tells users to check back on election day to “see America voting in real time.” There’s also a map on the page, so I’m assuming we’re going to get to see voters checking in at their polling places all across the country. Pretty cool.

A few days ago, Google launched their own voter information tool.
