After 12 Years of Losses, Twitter Finally Turns a Profit

Even seasoned Wall Street analysts were a bit surprised by Twitter’s latest financial report for the fourth quarter of 2017. No, the surprise was not really in the amount of profit it made for that quarter but on the fact that the company made a profit at all—a first in its 12-year existence.

In an announcement, the San Francisco-based social media company revealed that it earned a profit of $ 91 million for the fourth quarter of 2017. This is a very big improvement for the firm which announced a huge $ 167 million loss for the same period during the previous year. In addition, its quarterly revenue was reported to be $ 732 million or a 2 percent increase from 2016’s fourth quarter level.

However, the company still posted a net loss of $ 108 million for its entire 2017 financial performance. But the figure is still viewed as a favorable development considering that the company posted an even bigger annual loss of $ 457 million in 2016.

“We’re pleased with our performance in 2017 and our return to revenue growth in the fourth quarter,” Twitter CFO Ned Segal explained. Aside from the 2 percent increase in the fourth quarter total revenue, he also highlighted that advertising revenue rose by 7 percent. He attributed the growth to improved user engagement and revenue products as well as better sales execution and higher advertiser ROI.

As expected, the market reacted positively to the company’s announcement. Twitter’s shares rose by more than 20 percent following the announcement.

While Twitter announced that its monthly active users grew to 330 million, up 4 percent from the previous year, there are still many issues that could hamper the company’s future growth. For one, it’s facing increased scrutiny after an exposé by The New York Times revealed that the social media website is populated with millions of fake accounts created for users who are willing pay to artificially boost their number of followers.

New AdSense magazine ads turns text into display automatically

As a blogger, I’d rather have display ads than text ads on my site. Display ads don’t just look nicer, they actually add a certain. . . je ne sais quoi to my site that text ads simply don’t have. But, I’m reluctant to check the “display” only box in AdSense because I don’t want to limit my ad money-making opportunities.

Thank heavens, there’s a solution. Introducing the handy, dandy Magazine style ad from AdSense.

This magic tool turns any text ad into a display ad instantly! No buffing. No waxing. No waiting for the paint to dry.

Adsense magazine ads

Here’s how it works:

If a marketer with a text ad wins the bid on a display only site, the system will automatically reformat the text to look like the images you see above. Bigger boxes, nice shading, colorful text – actually readable and simple – but bigger. And because text ads can now compete with display ads, that means you’ve got a shot at placement on an upscale site that wouldn’t normally handle your business.

The same (or is it the reverse) goes for bloggers. (Hold on while I switch my marketer hat for my blogger hat.) With this option, there’s a larger pool of potential advertisers, which means more opportunities to make mo’ money.

Couple of notes:

Most text ad sizes will convert except for the following:

  • 120×240
  • 125×125
  • 180×150
  • 234×60
  • 320×50

If you use any of those, stop it and move over to ads that will convert. Why deny yourself?

For site mangers, if you currently have “display and text” as your AdSense option, this new program won’t apply. You have to change your preference to “display only”.  In the future, I suspect AdSense will take away the option entirely and just make all of the inventory options the same. I mean, is there anyone who only wants text ads?

If you’re rather not have these new magazine ads, you can opt-out and stay with true-display only, but again. . . why? At a glance, these new ad types seem like the perfect marriage between text and display. And right now, they’re new enough that they might actually catch a reader’s eye and isn’t that the ultimate goal?

What do you think? Game changer or no big deal?

Turns Out Anonymous Did Hack Into The Federal Reserve

On Sunday evening, Anonymous leaked over 4,000 banker profiles it claimed to have stolen from the federal reserve. The information contained names, addresses, IP addresses, hashed passwords and other sensitive information. Now the federal reserve has confirmed the hack, but says no “critical functions” were affected.

ZDNet reports that the Federal Reserve sent out notices to affected individuals earlier this week confirming an intrusion on their system. In a statement to Reuters, a spokesperson said the Federal Reserve was “aware that information was obtained by exploiting a temporary vulnerability in a Web site vendor product.” The vulnerability was reportedly fixed, and should cause no more problems in the future.

Of course, that doesn’t fix the fact that a list containing the personal data of over 4,000 bankers is still floating around the Internet. The Federal Reserve downplayed the hack by telling those affected that their passwords were not compromised. That’s technically true, but there’s still cause for concern.

Speaking to ZDNet, Jon Waldman, a senior information security consultant for financial institutions, said the hashed passwords included in the leak could be easily decrypted by hackers. The list which contained the information is no longer on the original hacked Alabama Web site, but it’s reportedly being hosted on a Chinese Web site for hackers to get a hold of. Waldman says the existence of this information means that banking executives “will be specific targets of Social Engineering and hacking attacks.”

It remains to be seen if any of the leaked information has led to attacks on individual banks. Waldman certainly thinks they’re at risk, but you would hope that banks would be wary of any attempts to solicit info after this latest attack.

We’ll continue to follow the exploits of Anonymous in #OpLastResort. It doesn’t appear that the hacktivist collective is done just yet, and likely has more attacks planned in the coming weeks.

Karmaloop Turns Twitter Hashtags into T-Shirts

Streetwear online shop Karmaloop has teamed up with Twitter on a clever, social media promotion. They’re asking fans on Twitter to create a hashtag worthy of being featured on a T-shirt. Anyone can submit a tag, then it’s up to the masses to choose their favorites.

Currently at the top of the pack: #MomentofTruth, #FreeNiro, and ironically #DontFollowTheHype.

The rules say you can submit a whole Tweet but there are only a few scattered through this week’s offerings, so apparently the majority of fans aren’t imaginative enough to come up with a whole sentence.

The contest was inspired by Karmaloop’s #TEES Collection, a line with #hashtags from youth culture icons like Clinton Sparks, Hopsin, Freeway, and Chris Webby. And I’ll be honest here and say, I have no idea who any of those people are.

What I like about the concept is that it’s so simple and yet so powerful. The hashtag, once only a means of categorizing data, has now become a culture icon in itself. You’ll always spot at least a couple of them in Twitter’s trend sidebar and companies are constantly striving to create one that will catch on.

#threewordstoliveby, #WhatsThePoint, #ThatsSoAnnoying, #winning, #snakeonthetown

Karmaloop also gets points for giving the power to the people. Directly involving fans in the creation and voting process is like hiring thousands of social media interns to do the work for you.

If you were going to submit a marketing related hashtag, what would it be? Sorry, I don’t have a prize for the best answer but I will retweet it if you come up with a tag I like.

YouTube Turns Casting Agent to Match Stars and Brands

You probably can’t afford to hire Kim Kardashian to hawk your jewelry line on YouTube but you might be able to afford a young YouTube fashion star who has a following all her own. To help you find her, YouTube is launching the Video Creation Marketplace, a platform designed to connect talent with brands of every size.

YouTube’s Baljeet Singh, told AdAge that there are already thousands of videographers making a living off their work. Many of them have already signed on to promote a brand but there are plenty more who are anxious to gain sponsorship.

The Video Creation Marketplace will feature profile pages showing a YouTubbers interests, their demographics, keywords and stats. Potential partners can peruse the list then make an offer and YouTube will stay out of it. They’re not getting involved in negotiations, they’re simply providing the platform.

This is an excellent opportunity for small businesses to move into the video space. Producing your own videos is time consuming and overwhelming and not everyone enjoys seeing themselves on camera. With the marketplace, any business should be able to find a current YouTube channel that fits their brand and their budget.

No production problems. No need to build an audience from scratch. All you do is provide the products and write the check. It doesn’t get easier than that.

Watch for the YouTube Video Creation Marketplace to bow later this summer.
