It’s Worse Than You Think, Facebook Exposes Millions More Users to Cambridge Analytica Data Breach

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, Facebook revealed that Cambridge Analytica was able to access personal data of up to 87 million users. The figure was shockingly higher than the previous estimate of 50 million.

The number was shared by the company’s chief technology officer, Mike Schroepfer, in a blog post. Schroepfer wrote that they “believe the Facebook information of up to 87 million people – mostly in the US – may have been improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica.”

Last month the personal data of almost 50 million Facebook users were unethically shared with Cambridge Analytica, a data company that worked on President Donald Trump’s campaign.

The huge discrepancy between the new figures and initial estimates was surprising, although Facebook’s head Mark Zuckerberg tried to downplay it a bit, saying that he’s confident the final tally of affected users will be lower than 87 million.

Zuckerberg is expected to appear before Congress on April 11 to discuss how Facebook manages the personal data and privacy of its 2-billion strong social media platform. Facebook’s CEO was also invited to appear before a committee of the UK parliament but he declined and just sent a deputy.

Facebook also posted another blog post stating that it had found and deleted almost 300 additional Instagram and Facebook accounts and pages with ties to the Internet Research Agency (IRA), a propaganda group working out of Russia.

Schroepfer’s blog post also confirmed several privacy updates, like the scrapping of phone numbers and email addresses being used to search for people on the social network. The company believes that due to “the scale and sophistication” of activities they’ve uncovered, the feature made it possible for information found on their public profile to be scrapped.

The blog also revealed that starting April 9, Facebook users will be able to check if their data was exposed to Cambridge Analytica. The disclosure on the data mining firm will reportedly appear at the top of users’ News Feed.

Shopify’s Instagram Integration to Open Doors for Millions of Vendors

Christmas comes early for Shopify and Instagram users, with the former now providing Instagram integration to most of its vendors.

The eCommerce company and Instagram had been collaborating on the new shopping service the whole year. Now the integration appears to be ready and Shopify is offering it to its millions of sellers.

Shopify has already established integration tools with Buzzfeed, Facebook, Facebook Messenger and other sites. With this new tool, vendors on Instagram can now tag photos of their products. This will include links to a page that includes more information about the product and its price. Users can buy the product straight from the mobile app using a “Shop Now” button that takes the buyer to the merchant’s page. And this feature is easier to set up with the Shopify integration, especially for users that already sell products on the site.

The company has admitted that Instagram is one of the major drivers of traffic to merchant stores and this collaboration can boost eCommerce sales. In fact, 72% of Instagram users revealed that they bought products they saw on the site. And last July, Shopify closed a deal with eBay that allowed vendors to sell their goods directly through the website, opening it to around 400,000 users. The company also made a similar deal with Amazon in 2015.

It has been Shopify’s game plan to integrate with various eCommerce channels to make it possible for its clients to branch out from their own sites. It also provides its sellers with small loans, shipping services, and payment tools. Shopify even offers tools for vendors to sell their products offline and provides point-of-sale hardware and software for those with physical shops.

The Instagram integration is currently being offered to select vendors but will ultimately be made available to all the stores and vendors that have accounts on Shopify.

Facebook Paying Millions To Publishers & Celebrities To Use Facebook Live

A document reviewed by the Wall Street Journal revealed that Facebook is going to pay $ 50 million to 140 publishers and celebrities that agreed to post Facebook Live videos. The publishers and celebrities will also be promoting their videos on their sites, Facebook and other social media channels.

This is a marketing strategy to launch Facebook Live as the place to post live videos thus changing the dynamic of the news feed from your friends text posts and pictures to television like entertainment and information. Facebook sees video as its future, both in terms of the type of content that users post and consume and as where they see the bulk of their future revenue coming. Just last week a Facebook VP stated in an interview that she predicts that within five years Facebook will be “all video.”

Facebook has long predicted that video advertising will eventually be their main source of revenue with Mark Zuckerberg once saying that if they sold a video ad at the top of the Facebook news feed for $ 1 million it would be equivalent to three Super Bowls every day.

Early this year, Zuckerberg talked about how Facebook will evolve to be a video platform commenting, “Most of the content 10 years ago was text, and then photos, and now it’s quickly becoming videos,” Zuckerberg said. “I just think that we’re going to be in a world a few years from now where the vast majority of the content that people consume online will be video.”

Just last week Zuckerberg hosted its first Facebook Live Q&A to all Facebook users, at one point reaching 6 million concurrent viewers.

The contracts to pay popular sites and celebrities is a way to launch Facebook Live while it works out a share of revenue concept. YouTube typically pays out 70% of revenue but pays even more for certain premium content. Its Facebook Live partners include a wide variety of publishers, celebrities and sports starts such as NFL quarterback Russell Wilson, CNN, Kevin Hart, Vox, Mashable, Tastemade, New York Times, Gordon Ramsay, Deepak Chopra and the Huffington Post.

Via WSJ.com:

“We wanted to invite a broad set of partners so we could get feedback from a variety of different organizations about what works and what doesn’t,” Justin Osofsky, Facebook’s vice president of global operations and media partnerships, said in a statement.

The value of individual contracts varies widely, with 17 worth more than $ 1 million, according to the document. The highest-paid publisher is BuzzFeed, slated to receive $ 3.05 million for broadcasting live between March 2016 and March 2017. Just behind BuzzFeed is the New York Times, which is to receive $ 3.03 million for a 12-month deal. CNN is third, with a $ 2.5 million contract.
