Lowe’s Goes the DIY Route For Software Development

Lowe’s slogan is “do it right for less.” While that primarily applies to home repair and improvement, the company is also applying it to the world of software development.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Lowe’s is looking to retool its e-commerce solutions. The goal is to have 80% of the applications it uses be built internally by 2020. This will involve looking at their application portfolio and replacing commercial, off-the-shelf applications with custom replacements. This will involve hiring as many as 2,000 software engineers, data analysts and infrastructure specialists.

As Mark Driver, research vice president at Gartner, Inc. told the WSJ, “we’re in an age where people have their clothes custom fit. The same thing goes with software; it’s about gaining that advantage.”

This is just the latest move on the part of the home-improvement giant to modernize its IT infrastructure. Shortly after being hired as CIO, Seemantini Godbole told analysts and investors the retailer’s technology was “well behind leading retailers in terms of strategy, architecture, process maturity and capabilities.” Ms. Godbole helped unveiled a plan to invest $ 500 to $ 550 million per year through 2021, in an effort to modernize the retailer’s decade-old e-commerce system.

The announcement by Lowe’s is just the latest in a solid growth trend for the custom software development market, as companies increasingly turn to custom solutions to achieve tighter integration, better performance and lower cost.

If you try to access the Google Quality Raters Guidelines PDF document, you will be out of luck. The PDF seems to have been removed from Google’s servers. This happened before and when that happened it was a mistake, Google fixed it. This time, I suspect it is almost a mistake and Google will fix it.

It looks like there is a recent bug with the Google knowledge panel images that some are actually missing. It was working fine a couple of hours ago, but right now, the images for many are simply blank. I assume it will be fixed soon.

Ghostery Goes Open Source, Reveals Two Proposed Revenue Streams

Ad-blocker Ghostery published its entire programming code on Thursday. By going open source, the company aims to clear the air on its old business model and invite others to contribute to its continuing development.

“As a privacy product, especially one designed to give users a look behind the scenes at what data companies are collecting and doing with it, we thought it was important to give our users a look under the hood,” Ghostery’s product manager Jeffrey Tillman said.

This unprecedented move was Ghostery’s response to conspiracy theories hounding the company. Before its acquisition by web browser Cliqz last year, previous owner Evidon earned money for Ghostery by selling users’ data. Software users chose to disclose information on ad trackers they encountered, but the compiled information was sold to eCommerce sites to help them discover why loading times slowed down.

Ghostery’s old business model was contradictory—a privacy-focused tool selling user data—and confused its users. “It was never a really great fit for Ghostery the consumer product,” Tillman admitted.

Recently, Ghostery announced two revenue streams as its new business model. First is Ghostery Insights, a paid analytics service for researchers to gather more data about the tracker ecosystem. Likewise, the analytics tool will aid web developers in quantifying the effect of trackers on site performance, such as loading speeds.

Meanwhile, Ghostery Rewards is an affiliate marketing program designed for its users. They can choose to sign up for the service wherein users will receive relevant promotional offers, a tamer version of aggressive web ads. There will still be advertisements, but only those worthwhile and interesting to Ghostery users.

Of course, affiliate programs are nothing new as many publications and bloggers already use them to generate revenue. However, Ghostery’s decided to make its program distinctly different from that of its main rival Adblock Plus. Unlike Ghostery Rewards, Adblock has an “acceptable ads program” that shows ads that may not be relevant to the user. As long as advertisers meet certain criteria and agree to split some of their ad revenue, Adblock lets them through.

Exposing Ghostery’s code to the public makes it more vulnerable for software developers to sidestep the ad blocker’s system. But Tillman isn’t losing sleep over it.

“There will always be a cat-and-mouse game with advertisers that are trying to find new ways to evade our technology but, if anything, going open-source should empower our community of contributors to help keep Ghostery ahead of the curve,” Tillman pointed out.

Oculus Rift Goes After Business Sector With New VR Bundle

Oculus VR is now trying to tap into a new market to boost the sales of its high-end virtual reality device. The company is now launching Oculus Business, effectively sweetening the deal for companies to snap up its Oculus Rift bundle.

Oculus vice president Hugo Barra made the announcement of its business bundle during the Oculus Connect conference in San Jose, Tech Crunch reported. The Oculus for Business package costs $ 900 and includes the hardware package, dedicated customer support, full VR license and enterprise-grade warranties.

The hardware package consists of the Oculus Rift headset, three room sensors, three Rift Fits and Oculus Touch Controllers, according to The Verge. Altogether, the hardware only costs $ 574, but the $ 900 price of the business bundle is still considered a great deal, given the warranty, commercial license and preferential customer support that go with it.

While virtual reality is still a relatively new technology, businesses can harness its potential to improve their reach and exposure as well as streamline their operations. For instance, VR can be utilized to aid personnel training and even allow potential customers to examine products in great detail in the virtual world. In the future, VR could be indispensable to a host of industries such as construction, manufacturing, education, tourism, and health.

In fact, the German automobile manufacturer Audi is one of the launch partners of the Oculus for Business. The carmaker harnessed VR to build virtual showrooms where potential buyers can configure a car and even walk around it to assist them in the selection and customization process.

Aside from Oculus VR, other virtual technology manufacturers such as Apple have been pitching their VR hardware as a business tool. Admittedly, the market for VR gear among individuals is a bit limited, as the price of the gadgets is a bit too steep for the average consumer. In addition, setting up a VR rig inside a home also requires some expertise. Businesses, however, have bigger budgets and tech-savvy staff at their disposal which makes it easier for them to buy and install VR equipment.

Nearly Half of All Digital Ad Spend in 2017 Goes to Google, Facebook

Advertisers’ spend on digital formats worldwide is predicted to increase 17.4 percent to $ 583.92 billion according to a recent forecast from eMarketer. That represents 38.3 percent of the world’s entire ad budgets.

Almost half of that money will go to Google and Facebook. According to eMarketer, Google will likely make $ 72.69 billion in ad revenues this year while Facebook will make $ 33.76 billion. For mobile formats, Facebook and Google take up more than half of worldwide mobile ad revenue.

eMarketer predicts Snapchat will increase revenues to $ 900 million this year, an increase of 163.3 percent but a small piece of the pie compared to the major players.

eMarketer analyst, Shelleen Shum: “In the immediate future, the only other potential rivals to Facebook and Google are the big 3 Chinese companies, Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent (BAT), who are riding on a wave of rising disposable incomes and a growing tech savvy population in China. The BAT companies are expected to experience resilient digital and mobile ad revenue growth as they start to fully monetize their various advertising products.”

Alibaba, Baidu and Tencent are projected to collectively make $ 35.82 billion from advertising this year.
