After 12 Years of Losses, Twitter Finally Turns a Profit

Even seasoned Wall Street analysts were a bit surprised by Twitter’s latest financial report for the fourth quarter of 2017. No, the surprise was not really in the amount of profit it made for that quarter but on the fact that the company made a profit at all—a first in its 12-year existence.

In an announcement, the San Francisco-based social media company revealed that it earned a profit of $ 91 million for the fourth quarter of 2017. This is a very big improvement for the firm which announced a huge $ 167 million loss for the same period during the previous year. In addition, its quarterly revenue was reported to be $ 732 million or a 2 percent increase from 2016’s fourth quarter level.

However, the company still posted a net loss of $ 108 million for its entire 2017 financial performance. But the figure is still viewed as a favorable development considering that the company posted an even bigger annual loss of $ 457 million in 2016.

“We’re pleased with our performance in 2017 and our return to revenue growth in the fourth quarter,” Twitter CFO Ned Segal explained. Aside from the 2 percent increase in the fourth quarter total revenue, he also highlighted that advertising revenue rose by 7 percent. He attributed the growth to improved user engagement and revenue products as well as better sales execution and higher advertiser ROI.

As expected, the market reacted positively to the company’s announcement. Twitter’s shares rose by more than 20 percent following the announcement.

While Twitter announced that its monthly active users grew to 330 million, up 4 percent from the previous year, there are still many issues that could hamper the company’s future growth. For one, it’s facing increased scrutiny after an exposé by The New York Times revealed that the social media website is populated with millions of fake accounts created for users who are willing pay to artificially boost their number of followers.

Kelli Bordeaux: Remains Finally Found

Police announced on Wednesday that the remains of a woman soldier that had been missing for two years was recently found.

23-year-old Fort Bragg-based Pfc. Kelli Bordeaux was last seen outside of the Froggy Bottoms bar on Ramsey Street in Fayetteville, N.C. in April 2012.

The young woman had spent the evening socializing, drinking, and singing karaoke. Her vanishing was a disturbing mystery to her family and the Fayetteville community.

Col.Christian Karsner is the chief of staff at Task Force Bragg. Karsner said in a statement, “We are deeply saddened that the discovery of the apparent remains of Army Spc. Kelli Bordeaux now concludes our final hopes of her returning safely.”

Lt. Col Heather A. Kness, Bordeaux’s battalion commander, said the following in a statement:

She and her family have remained close in our hearts since Kelli last stood in our formation in April 2012. We honor her memory and will always remember her vibrant spirit, her love of life and her loyal and dedicated service to our Army and nation as a combat medic.

The deceased soldier’s body was found in what was described as a deeply wooded area. According to Fayetteville Police Chief Harold Medlock, Bordeaux’s remains were located by authorities about three to four miles from where she was last seen alive.

A man named Nicholas Holbert was arrested in connection with Bordeaux’s disappearance and murder.

Holbert is a registered sex offender who was questioned multiple times by law enforcement.

Apparently, Holbert worked at the Froggy Bottoms bar and was seen there on the night of Bordeaux’s disappearance.

Holbert is said to have confessed to the murder. He allegedly led police to the shallow grave that held Bordeaux’s remains.

The 27-year-old was reportedly charged with first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping. Prosecutors are considering the death penalty.

Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate the area where the young woman’s remains were found.

Authorities said that the location is being treated as an active crime scene.

Mila Kunis Finally Speaks Out on Baby, Engagement

Mila Kunis has finally broken her silence on her pregnancy and engagement to Ashton Kutcher.

Appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Friday for a Mother’s Day special, Kunis revealed that their news was hidden far longer than anyone imagined.

“We were actually able to hide it for a very long time, yeah it’s amazing,” Kunis told DeGeneres.

Still being predictably evasive, the That 70s Show actress wouldn’t reveal the due date or the baby’s gender.

“Some time this year,” she said. “I promise you, it will be this year.”

She did, however, share that her pregnancy cravings have been odd to say the least.

“I’m very stereotypical,” she said of her cravings. “I eat sauerkraut all day long. … This is the worst craving to have because sauerkraut smells and so every time you open up a jar it just reeks in the whole kitchen. It’s not like ice cream where everything smells lovely.”

DeGeneres teased her about her food cravings, saying that perhaps Kunis’ vinegar-based cravings might mean she’s having a boy, to which Kunis responded, “Interesting. Okay.”

The Jupiter Ascending star also said that Ashton is in the process of learning Russian so that he can participate in speaking to their child in Kunis’ native tongue.

“He’s been taking [Russian] classes for probably like six months now,” she said. “He does it twice a week. A woman comes to the house to give him lessons … it’s really, really great.”

Kunis told DeGeneres she plans on a natural birth, but will be at a hospital in case of an emergency.

“I’m gonna do it as all natural as I possibly can unless there’s an emergency or something that should wrong,” Kunis said.

And by natural, the Black Swan actress means with no epidural.

“I know, I’m crazy. I mean, I did this to myself I might as well do it right,” she said. “I wanted this. It’s not like no one made me do this.”

According to Kunis, the couple was engaged much longer than the public ever knew and were able to enjoy betrothed bliss in private.

“We were able to keep this private for two months — two months without anybody knowing,” she said of their engagement. “I think everybody assumed we’ve been engaged for so long that I was wearing the ring in public for two months and no photograph was ever…like nobody ever commented on a single photograph. It was amazing.”
